the ywca salem mission & history

YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and
promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

YWCA Salem works to maintain the National YWCA's goals and objectives,
while keeping our primary focus on meeting the needs of our local community.

The last century has seen YWCA Salem transform the lives of thousands of women and their families.  Once we were known for our socials, swimming, and fitness.  As the needs and demands of women have changed, so has YWCA Salem.  We have been responsive to the needs of:

- school age girls via enrichment in science, technology, engineering and math experiences,

- at risk teen moms and their babies

- women without health insurance

- homeless women and their families

- women and their families from differing cultural heritage and language of origin

- women and their families lacking basis needs.

One significant difference we have seen over the years is the number of men that are part of our service delivery group.  Many young men have served on the SnoBall Committee actively planning and executing this teen event; many have acquired shelter and attended coping skills classes to name a few.  Just as “men only” organizations have extended to be inclusive of women, the YWCA Salem provides services and support to men and their families.
