we have openings for all age groups
We provide quality early childhood care and education for children in the community from 6 weeks to 6 years of age.
A quality early learning program is provided for all children and includes a wide variety of activities and opportunities for physical, social, emotional and intellectual development. Early literacy and emotional bonding are critical aspects of the program. Excellent nutrition is provided though the USDA program which furnishes breakfast, lunch and snacks daily.
The Center is licensed by the Child Care Division of the State of Oregon and is funded through parent service fees and the Department of Human Services.
Our Facility
Our classrooms our very large with attached bathrooms and entrances to a fabulous playground. The playground has swings, sandbox, large climber, grass, trees, squirrels and birds, shade, and tricycle paths. In case of inclement weather, we also have huge covered areas with a loft, short basketball hoop, and other play equipment.
The YWCA Childcare Center is open Monday-Friday from 7:30 AM to 6 PM. It is open to all children who might benefit from the program regardless of race, nationality or creed. It is nonprofit, nonsectarian, and nonpolitical.
The Center is located at 4071 Winema Place NE, in Salem, on the campus of Chemeketa Community College.
Our Staff
Our staff are educated and experienced in providing stimulating environments and interaction that promotes healthy child development. They all have training in Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse, CPR, First Aid, and food handling. Each is registered on the Oregon Criminal History Registry and meet the annual requirements for continuing education classes in early childhood education.
We are piloting two mixed-age groupings which will give the children a more family-like atmosphere and allow them to form relationships with children of differing ages. The ratio in the new mixed-age groups is 1 provider for every 4 children. Excellent ratio!

childcare program for teen moms
Teens who get pregnant in high school are at risk for many problems throughout life. They haven't even finished high school, have little work experience, yet they must now provide for a baby. They are more likely to be on welfare and in poverty in their lifetime. Because of the stress, poverty, and an adolescent brain that is still developing, they usually provide inadequate parenting and are at risk of abusing their children.
The YWCA Teen Parent Program gives these teens a chance to continue their education. We provide childcare while these teen moms attend Early College High School and work toward their diploma or GED. Our providers give their children individual attention and activities that foster healthy development.
The Center provides a safe, stable, and nurturing environment where children benefit from the enhanced parenting skills and educational success of their parents. Objectives are to increase the likelihood that these children will succeed in school and move into healthy, productive adulthood.
This program was created by the YWCA Salem 40 years ago and is sustained through a partnership with Salem/Keizer School District, Department of Health Services, the Child Care Division and United Way.
